We found these vintage medals in the Paris flea, and we learned that the large and heavy cross, or “combatant’s cross” was originally given to war veterans who served in the French military. We paired it with a tiny enameled miraculous Mary medal and put them on two linked sterling silver chains for a mixed metal vibe. The necklace can be worn long (36” length) or shorter on either of the 18” chains.
Front:
The Combatant's Cross was designed as military decoration to recognize soldiers who served in the French military.
The image in the middle of the cross features an image of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic. The inscription “Republique Francaise” surrounds the image.
Back:
The image in the middle of the cross shows a sword with rays of light and the inscription “Croix du Combattant”
Front:
Oval enameled miraculous medal designed in the 19th century after a vision of the Virgin Mary appeared to Catherine, instructing her to spread the word of grace to a world that did not have enough of it. The Miraculous medal is extremely popular. According to Catherine’s vision, anyone who wore this medal would receive great graces.
Back:
Cross and arms with large “M”. The twelve stars represent the Apostles and crown of stars encircling the head of the woman in the sky (referred to in the book of Revelations) The two hearts represent the Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart.
This is known as the Medal of Our Lady of Graces or Miraculous medal.
